WHAT IS KARATE?
Karate originated in Japan, literally meaning "the way of the empty hand." Karate is a far more diverse sport than most other martial arts. Lessons are varied, with an array of activities that maim to build on and develop power and strength (pad work), agility and speed (sparring), self defence (ippons), coordination and general principles of karate (kata and basics.) All these aspects are covered with an overall emphasis on respect for oneself and others, fitness, social awareness and practical self defence. We aim to bring out the best in each student, whilst increasing confidence also. More than a method of combat, karate emphasises self-discipline, a positive attitude, and a high moral purpose. Moreover, a sense of community within the club is strong, driven by a good workout.
WHAT STYLE OF KARATE WILL I BE DOING AND WHAT CLUB WILL I BE JOINING?
The style of karate we do is called ‘Shukokai,’ which means "way for all." We are members of the Shukokai Karate Union (SKU) which is now over 35 years old. The SKU has over 50 clubs nationwide and is a part of t"Karate England." This is the only karate body in England to be recognised by ‘Sport Karate,’ and the World Karate association. Romiley karate club was established in 2003, but already it has enjoyed unprecedented success on the local and national circuit. We have had countless successful gradings, training a number of our students to obtain their coveted Black Belt Dan Grade. Furthermore, we have broken established records with some of our most talented students ‘skipping’ grades. Romiley karate club has now entered numerous national tournaments in which we have been extremely successful, winning many trophies and crowning several champions. We pride ourselves in training our students to such a high standard. See our website for our latest set of results.
WHERE ARE LESSONS AND WHEN?
Please see the location and lessons pages for more details.
WHO IS THE INSTRUCTOR?
Lessons are taken by Sensei David Moon, 3rd Dan Black Belt, every Tuesday and Friday. David is a fully qualified, registered and CRB-checked karate instructor who has been training for over 15 years now and teaching in clubs for over a decade. He is a keen enthusiast within the SKU karate community with many results on the national and open competition circuit. You will notice that the club is a family-orientated club and David is assisted by experienced junior instructors and family members.CAN I GRADE FOR NEW BELTS?
Certainly. If you attend lessons regulary and have a MINIMUM of 20 lessons during an approximated 3 month period (40 lessons within 6 months for purple belts onwards) and are a club and up to date SKU licence holder, you just need to be comfortable with the relevant syllabus which is obviously taught in lesson. Gradings (exams) are held approximately every three months, when an SKU grading officer (Sensei Damien Mcloughlin 7th Dan) comes to the club to assess our students.
IS KARATE AN EXPENSIVE SPORT?
No. Once you have bought all your basic equipment, such as a "gi" (karate suit) and sparring wear (essential for safety) only the lesson fees are needed. Basics such as punching pads and mats will be provided at the lessons. It is essential to stress that it isn’t necessary to buy ANYTHING until you are comfortable that karate is the right sport for you. It's pointless buying items straight away if you aren't going to stick at the sport. However, if you intend on starting up, which we are confident you will do, items can be ordered from Sensei in club. Just ask for an order form.
It will eventually be necessary to purchase a yearly SKU association membership. Without this you will not be able to grade. Club membership is also advisable. It is of great value, being a lifetime one that entitles the student to lessons at a discount, and the opportunity to block bookings for an even greater discount.
HOW MUCH ARE LESSONS?
Lessons can be purchased on an individual or weekly basis.
Private lessons are also available. Please either email, ring or call in club for more specific details.
WHY SHOULD I TRY KARATE?
For all of the reasons above. Lessons are tiring, but a fun place to meet new people and share ideas. Karate not only gives you positive physical attributes (speed, power and flexibility etc.) but spiritual ones also. It assists in the development of self-confidence and encourages individuality. Karate will help you gain: increased respect for yourself and others; increased self control and the ability to defend oneself; power; speed; strength; accuracy and elegance. There are many opportunities to make new friends and take part in the social life of the club and the association. There will also be opportunities to enter competitions and try and win a trophy and title. If you wish to try a new sport, karate could be the sport for you!
